Finding furniture that fits

One of the joys of having an old house is all of the funny little gaps and nooks - and the lack of storage space. I'm making it my mission to fill up all of our funny little nooks and crannies with shelves and cupboards to keep out stuff organise and out of site. Some of our areas are so unusual I'm getting custom furnture solutions made - like our kitchen which is not really suited to cooking in this century! If you are also dealing with retrofitting furniture to create storage in an old house, then you'll appreciate the hints on my blog.

Key Factors for Stomach Sleepers to Consider When Buying a Mattress

Different people sleep in different positions; some will lie on their backs, others will curl up on their sides, and still others will lie on their stomachs. Since there are many different kinds of mattresses available, it only makes sense to take the time to pick one that will help you slumber peacefully and comfortably in your preferred sleeping position.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the type of mattress considerations you should make if you're a stomach sleeper.

Medium Firmness Should Be Your Goal

Unfortunately, it isn't terribly healthy to sleep on your stomach since it puts your spine under strain. It might sound odd to say that your spine can be hurt when you aren't even resting on it, but the truth is that lying on your stomach flattens out the natural curve, which can cause back pain.

This is why you'll need to pick up a relatively firm mattress. If you sleep on a softer mattress, you'll sink even deeper into its surface at the middle of your body, which will push the spine even more out of its proper alignment and overextend the arch of the back. At the same time, you want to avoid going for the firmest mattress available. This will mean that your stomach is lying against too hard a surface, something that can disrupt digestion. Look for medium firmness to get the best of both worlds.

Coil Spring Mattresses Should Be Avoided

One type of mattress you'll certainly want to avoid is coil spring. These are generally the cheapest available mattresses, but they are not ideal for supporting pressure points along your body. Body weight will not be evenly distributed, so the negative effects of stomach-sleeping will be made worse.

Instead, look for a memory foam mattress. These will distribute pressure more evenly, so you won't find that most of your weight is being supported by the area of mattress just below your stomach. If you aren't keen on the sensation of memory foam, try latex instead.

Make Sure You Go Hypoallergenic

Allergies are another great reason to shun coil spring mattresses in favour of either memory foam or latex. Dust mites, bacteria, mould, and mildew cannot live in latex or penetrate memory foam, but they can easily thrive inside a spring coil mattress. This is an important consideration for stomach-sleepers since their faces will be pressed up close to the surface of the mattress. Every inhalation will draw in air from right next to the mattress, so make sure you pick something that allergens and irritants will have a hard time contaminating.
